Sometimes, when an elven maiden dies under horrendous circumstances, her soul cannot rest. She may become a banshee and seek revenge on all those who harmed her. Every hour of the day, starting from shortly after the moment of her death, a banshee becomes more and more powerful. Immediately after the time of her death, she is the weakest. Merely a wisp, unable to affect anything. As the hours progress, she becomes more corporeal and can affect her surroundings directly. Like a poltergeist, she can alter her environment by moving things and manifesting. As the time of her death approaches, she becomes extremely powerful. She appears much as she did in life and may even possess the vibrant beauty of her living self. However, this is an illusion. Her bloodcurdling scream is enough to drive the soul from any living creature around her. At the time of her death, she is at full strength. Nothing can stand before her. There is no reasoning with her. There is no remorse. There is only unrelenting pain and death.
Barrow ants are roughly the size of a house cat. They live in low-rounded mounds called barrows of tens to hundreds with a single queen. They are opportunistic ambush hunters as well as scavengers. Though their name may sound like they live near graveyards, they tend to like drier climes with many places to hide.
These predatory lizards are roughly the size of a large dog or wolf. They are voracious hunters and will strike and eat anything, humanoids included. Males have two rows of spines jutting from their backs. These spines end in sharp plates. During mating season, they display these spines and vigorously rub them together to attract mates. The rasping sound has been compared to giant dominos falling. Basilisks are hunted for their skin and plates. In mythology, they were known to kill humans just by looking at them, but this does not appear to be the case. They are natives of the continent of Rica and a few isolated locations north of the continent. They prefer rocky, warm, arid climates.
Behemoths are giant beasts of burden. They are used to transport large loads across vast distances. They are tireless and highly resistant to poison, disease, and kryon dust. They are herbivores that eat tons of vegetable matter at once but can go weeks without food. It is rumored that they don’t digest the food directly. Instead, a particular fungus in their gut slowly processes the food, providing them with constant energy. This also makes them resistant because they don’t directly metabolize what they eat. However, they can suffer from major digestive issues if this balance is poorly maintained.
Hobgors are large frog-like amphibians. They are green to black and sport a mane of sharp spikes from the top of their head down their back. Their most impressive feature is their large mouth. It can open to a remarkable four feet or more, and its elastic tongue can grab prey 10 feet away. Having no teeth, they have to swallow their prey whole. They often bite way more than they could ever swallow and then have to spit it out. Gobbers like to use them as mounts and catch them for this purpose.
Known to frequent dark and musty caverns, these spiders are not solitary hunters. Instead, they are communal and live in large-webbed nests. Their bite carries many necrotic diseases that kill their victims and sometimes animate them after death. There have been known cases where sizeable rot spider infestations have decimated local populations and replaced them with mindless zombies. Without a steady food source, the communities will resort to cannibalism. No documented zombie rot spiders have been reported, so it appears they are immune to their own poison.
Vampires are intelligent undead with a hunger for fresh blood. They are incredibly strong and agile for their size, and their bites can spread the affliction to the victims. Actively drinking their blood has a much higher chance of spreading the infection. Some call it a curse; others seek out vampires in the hopes of becoming one. They are extremely susceptible to both UVA and UVB light, so much so that they will ignite on contact. They tend to lair in darkness, far away from sunlight, and come out at night to feed. They don't have to breathe air, but they do need air to speak. Religious symbols have no effect, nor does silver. They do regenerate superficial wounds, but they are not infallible. They can be killed permanently by any weapon that can pierce their heart or brain. It does not need to be wood or silver.
Zombies are animated, mindless corpses that tend to hang out in groups. They also make great analogs for herd mentality and rampant consumerism.
